Houses near elementary schools and kindergartens are allowed to sell guns
FLUSHING, Mich. (WNEM) – A house in mid-Michigan, about a quarter of a mile from an elementary school, has been given the green light for the gun business.
The issue may not be controversial.
The home in Flushing has been approved by the Flushing Planning Commission for a special use permit to manufacture, alter or repair firearms – a prospect that initially worried some residents.
“I’ve always felt uncomfortable with firearms being introduced into a community, simply because of what happened across the country including yesterday in Chicago and here,” said Flushing resident George Gray. Michigan,” said George Gray, resident of Flushing.
Residents are concerned about the home being less than a quarter of a mile from Springview Elementary and close to a licensed gun-related daycare.
Zoning codes for the city of Flushing are subject to a number of occupational conditions, including being consistent with the characteristics of the surrounding area.
“I think based on the information they were given, the trustees may have made the best decision they could,” Gray said.
Clinton Hippensteel applied for a special use license.
“This is mostly just a registration process,” says Hippensteel.
Hippensteel did not want to make a statement after the meeting but made it clear that he would not produce ammunition or even change weapons.
Instead, he plans to maintain diaries and records, and check on individuals who are purchasing and signing up for weapon modifications.
“A lot of this will be done online as a broker. You must deliver the goods to a federal firearms licensee for them to supply you with the firearms that you purchase over the internet. What I need is the FLL application through the AFT to register these guns as they are manufactured,” says Hippensteel.
“The gentleman’s intention was much clearer when he explained it than in the application. The app makes one feel like he is making and repairing guns at his home. But I’m still wondering. I’m just not a fan of firearms in the community,” Gray said.
