How Bryce Young, Alabama stunned Auburn by winning 4OT Iron Bow

The Iron Bowl made another great entry on Saturday, when the Alabama No. 3 stunned an Auburn team by upsetting the Crimson Time with a 24-22, four-overtime victory at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

In fact, at some point – Alabama’s hopes of victory were long gone. Indeed, Auburn’s defense sacked Bryce Young seven absurd times while limiting the Crimson Tide foul to just 381 yards, 97 of which came from a game that ended at the last minute.

THAN: Live blog from Alabama’s great getaway

That solid defensive performance, along with some Alabama missteps – such as top receiver Jameson Williams pushed out due to targeting – allowed the Tigers a 10-0 lead in the fourth round. Indeed, Alabama didn’t get on the board for the first time until 8:44 left in the final inning. This is the first time since the 2016 LSU game that the Crimson Tide has been beaten in three quarters. Alabama is in danger of having to close for the first time since the 2000 Iron Bowl (the Tigers’ 9-0 win).

But Young (25 of 51 passes, 317 yards, two touchdowns, one intercept) led Alabama to score on two of the last three drives, making the game stoppage time. The teams then swapped points – touching the ball, scoring and converting to 2 points in the first three innings, respectively – before Alabama finally went away with a fourth overtime victory.

Even Alabama coach Nick Saban, who was able to start as coach in a dazzling victory, looked stunned by the turn of events:

Here’s how Alabama managed to overcome a scoreless deficit and beat Auburn in a wild overtime finish in Jordan-Hare:

Kool-Aid McKinstry fires TJ Finley

The start of Alabama’s comeback began with a defensive play from the freshman Alabama full-back. Auburn faced third and fifth from Alabama’s 20th team after knocking Young out at Crimson Tide 45. The Tigers moved quickly down the field, but Finley’s McKinstry 15-yard layoff put the Tigers at Alabama 35. Freshman coach Bryan Harsin was elected not to attempt the 49-yard goal with substitute Ben Patton, instead starting with 7:45 remaining in the third inning.

That kept the Tigers from trying for a 13-0 lead, which might have ultimately proved the difference between a 13-10 rule win and a 24-22 defeat in four extra time. This isn’t the last time McKinstry has made his mark on the game.

Josh Jobe intercepts Finley

Yet another proactive defensive playstyle kept the Crimson Tide in the game. Alabama just overturned the ball from Auburn 39 with 11:54 remaining in the fourth round, keeping the game and looking likely to give Auburn the win.

But, one play later, Finley’s pass to Kobe Hudson was too high and too zipped; The pass slipped out of Hudson’s hand and went straight into Jobe’s hand at Alabama 42.

Seven innings later, Alabama’s Will Reichard scored on the Crimson Tide with a 30-yard goal to make it 10-3.

THAN: Bigsby’s mistake opens the door for Tide

Bigsby tank runs out of bounds

Bigsby didn’t have the best game, dashing 29 times in 63 yards, but overall did enough to help the Tigers untangle. However, a play on the Tigers’ penultimate inning kept the Crimson Tide in the game: exceeding the 10-yard limit in the second and eleventh innings.

The game is definitely a positive. But, because he went over the limit, it saved Alabama from using its final timeout. In a later playthrough, Byron Young and Henry To’oTo’o settled with Bigsby losing 4 yards, at which point Alabama used the final timeout with 1:43 remaining in the game. Auburn’s shot was dropped in Alabama 3, but gave Young and Co 1:35 left to work on the lower court for the end of the game.

Bryce Young faced Jacorey Brooks at 28 yards

Young completed only 6 of 10 passes in the final inning of the rule, but did 85 yards as the Crimson Tide advanced 97 yards to the end of the game score. No finish is more important than his last shot: a 28-yard touchdown against Ja’Corey Brooks, whose first start of the day was a 21-yard runner earlier:

With that, Alabama tied the match to just 24 seconds in allotted time. Auburn was elected to take the game to extra time with a knee-jerk act.

THAN: Michigan, Jim Harbaugh finally give Ohio State competition a much-needed ‘fresh start’

McKinstry deflected in fourth extra time

McKinstry’s second game changed in final stoppage time. After trading three points in each period after the first regulation with Auburn, Alabama found itself on the defensive. Finley rolled to the right and, with pressure on his face, tried to find Shedrick Jackson in the corner of the back yard. McKinstry made a defensive save in extra time, slamming the ball harmlessly into the half and giving Alabama the chance to win the final.

Convert 2 winning points in Alabama’s game

The last nail in the coffin was for Auburn. Credit to John Metchie, whose quick lane run against Roger McCreary netted him a 13th catch from 150 yards. It also provided the dagger for Alabama as it overcame a 10-point deficit and beat rival Auburn in Jordan-Hare for the first time since 2015:
