How does alcohol use correlate with childhood loneliness?

The results identified a correlation between feelings of loneliness during the pre-adolescent years and current levels of alcoholism and stress.

“In young adults, loneliness before age 12 is associated with perceived stress and affects moderate drinking”.

Alcohol abuse isn’t the only health problem linked to loneliness. In older adults, loneliness contributes to poor physical health, including dementia, heart disease and stroke.

The study predicts a dire future as alcohol use continues to increase across the country. More and more women are turning to alcohol, according to data from the US National Institutes of Health, suggesting that alcohol use among women is more likely to result in higher rates of alcohol abuse than in men.

Is the COVID-19 pandemic adding fuel to the fire?

Another study found that the COVID-19 pandemic was also responsible for a 14% increase in alcohol consumption among adults over 30, as people turned to alcohol to quell anxiety and isolation.

The authors say the study was conducted before the pandemic led to school closures and other forms of social isolation.

“The data used in this study was collected before the pandemic, and these findings suggest we could be in for another public health crisis in a few years when children are young,” said Patock-Peckham. I’m growing up today,” Patock-Peckham said in an earlier university press release.

“We need more research into whether reducing childhood loneliness could be a way to disrupt the pathways to alcohol use disorder in adults,” she said. “Combating childhood loneliness will help reduce the ability to control drinking, especially in women.”

‘Becoming a lonely child’ is directly linked to heavy drinking, the report said. “Cognitive stress is directly associated with increased impaired alcohol control,” it said.

Research shows that stress affects how a person turns to excessive drinking, especially in women.

Peckham concludes: “We need more research into whether reducing childhood loneliness could be a way to disrupt the pathways to adult alcohol use disorder. Combating loneliness childhood will help reduce the ability to control drinking, especially in women,” concluded Peckham.

The correlation between childhood loneliness and tendency to drink in adulthood, not a cause-and-effect relationship, was found only by researchers.

The study was funded by the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
