In the last act of Our Last (2013), Joel and Ellie unconsciously arrive in Salt Lake City after many brutal adventures, and Ellie is immediately taken to treatment. Marlene, who didn’t think that Joel could develop a father-son relationship with the child he was hired to smuggle, told Joel that the only way to cure it was to remove part of Ellie’s brain, which would kill kill her. That became the beginning for Our Last‘ final battle sequence.
Joel kills everyone in the Firefly lab and takes Ellie out of the building. While the player, through Joel, kills a lot of characters over the course of the game, the ending will be difficult to emphasize. this rage as a thing beyond. And apparently, unlike role-playing games, Joel’s actions are not chosen by the player — the only way to continue the game is to control Joel as he executes begging doctors. their lives, shot Marlene in cold blood, and then lied to Ellie about it.
When Ellie finally wakes up and asks what happened and why they left the Firefly base, Joel provides her with a complete fabrication, convincing her that the Firefly scientists have discovered it. discovered that individual immunity could not produce a cure, and so he took her without incident. Joel and Ellie return to the hideout together when the game is over, leaving the fate of humanity and the morality that Joel chooses, to the player’s imagination.
It’s the ending that recolors Joel and Ellie’s long in-game journey from a hopeful world-saving quest into something darker and more personal. It is a change in the sense that surprises are revealed (Ellie would have to die to be cured; a cure is not made) but the revelations are not what spurred the discussion. There are many different ways to feel about the events of the end of Our Last – that Joel was wrong, and that his behavior was to blame. That Joel’s actions are to blame, but he does it out of love. It is either too serious for the game to draw the player into his rage or the game design is bad. Or simply everyone else is overreacting to a rather hilarious video game that tells an interesting story in which you have to kill zombies, cult cultists, and other things.
But that’s the end implementation of Our Last make sure all those feelings are felt strongly. And where there’s strong emotion, you’ll have endless conversations, and ultimately, people want to Google to see what people are talking about.
