How Hyundai N Vision 74, 1974 Pony Coupe Concept and DeLorean DMC-12 intersect

LOS ANGELES — Since then hyundai disclosure Vision N 74, we simply wanted it and its striking design to be published as a production sample. That doesn’t happen today, but the car’s designer, SangYup Lee, had some tidbits to share about this car’s past and where it fits in with wedge history. Of course, we listened very carefully.

The story that Lee, head of Hyundai’s Global Design Center, tells begins in 1974 when Hyundai revealed Concept Pony Coupe. This is the concept that the N Vision 74 uses as its design inspiration, but it turns out that the Pony concept is much more than what was previously known. Apparently, Hyundai also tried to develop the Pony Coupe Concept into a production car. This is the new history that Lee just revealed to us here at Los Angeles Auto Show, and he says the company learned about it after digging into the archives. Lee said we are Hyundai found engineering plans and drawings of a production version of the Pony Coupe from 1977, three years after the Concept was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show.

“When we first set our sights on the Coupe, at the auto show, we came to the conclusion that it was just a futuristic concept just for the show,” says Lee. “But then we discovered this drawing, we understood that the coupe was being developed as a production car. And became extremely curious to learn more.”

The end result of Hyundai’s research into why the Pony Coupe never went into production is a somewhat common story about why so many cars fail. Lee said that a combination of the lack of social acceptance in South Korea, suspicion from the sales department, and technical limitations ultimately led Hyundai to abandon the project. It’s a sad story, as Hyundai has specially developed the Pony Coupe to be a sport car, according to internal documents Hyundai discovered. The only things left to show that this car existed were photos of the three prototype test cars and technical drawings.

Although the Pony Coupe’s production dreams are dying out, Lee now says the design is not. In case you missed it the first time when Hyundai revealed the N Vision 74, the designer of the Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept and DeLorean DMC-12 is the same person, legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. It used to be easy to deduce, but now Hyundai says (with assistance from ItalDesign and Giugiaro) that the Pony Coupe Concept is the obvious inspiration for the DMC-12.

“The essence of the Pony Coupe went into production, but with a different brand,” says Lee. “Do you notice the similarity? Not your imagination. Lee finished when Hyundai showed a photo of the DeLorean and Pony Coupe side by side. Today, the inspiration for the N Vision 74 is to bring to life today what has never been seen in daylight as a Hyundai in the 1970s.

“We have to really, really build this beautiful story,” Lee told us as he pointed to the N Vision 74 on the show floor in LA. “Let’s point that to the future. So this is how we actually came up with this idea.”

In a way, the Pony Coupe fits perfectly into the design of the N Vision 74. Now, we all just have to convince Hyundai to build this epic sports car.
