NFL tiebreak for playoffs

The NFL has a longstanding system for deciding how each team will enter the knockout stages in order to avoid a potentially draw for any position. They have slightly different tiebreak formats to decide who will advance between division leaders and wild card points.

Here’s how the NFL is going to break the lead relationship between the two teams. The same table applies to three or more teams, with the only difference being that in step three a minimum of four games is required. If only two teams are still tied after the third step or another team is eliminated, the tiebreaker will return to the first step.

  1. Head-to-head record (best win-loss ratio in matches between clubs).
  2. Best win-lose-tie ratio in games played in division.
  3. Best win-lose-tie ratio in regular games.
  4. Best draw-to-loss ratio in games played in games.
  5. The power of victory.
  6. The power of schedules.

  11. Best net hit rate of all games.

  5. The power of victory.
  6. The power of schedules.
