How to Be a Respected Visitor in Hawaii – The Hollywood Reporter

Kourtney Kang – who created the new Disney + show Doogie Kamealoha, MD., was filmed and set in Oahu – born in Mililani, a small town on the island of Oahu.

Kang, whose father comes from a Korean immigrant family, spent her childhood years in Hawaii and later growing up visiting the islands, where she still has her family. She talked to The Hollywood Reporter about ways to be an attentive and responsible tourist to the state.

Hawaii has just reopened to tourism after being closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. What do you think travelers should keep in mind when they return?

Hawaii has a long history of people coming and bringing disease because it’s an isolated place. Native Hawaiians lived there for too long without any contact with the rest of the world, so when people first started coming to Hawaii, an illness like the common cold would kill. a native Hawaiian. A large part of the population has been wiped out. They have no antibodies. Especially now, everyone must be careful and wear masks when necessary and follow the procedures. [U.S. travelers flying to Hawaii can bypass the state’s still-in-effect quarantine rule by showing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test.]

How else should one be a responsible visitor?

Hawaii is a warm and welcoming place, and the way they operate is what’s ours and yours too. My uncle told this story that once he went fishing and he caught two fish because that was what his family could eat that night. He saw a group of tourists catching like seven or eight fish, and he knew they wouldn’t eat them all. So the idea is, “What do you do need? ” and just be ready to leave it for others who are coming fishing. It’s something to keep in mind as you travel through Hawaii. And the most important thing is not to litter, especially on the beaches. Just be mindful – if you open a piece of gum, the wrapping paper may blow away.

I also think that sometimes there is a mentality [where] folks just want people to expect from them. We are still in the midst of a pandemic; There is a shortage of staff everywhere. Being patient and understanding will get you a lot further than expecting everything to be perfect and everyone to satisfy your every whim. The spirit of aloha is a two-way street. It is not something taken from the islands. It’s something you can also give away.

What does the cast like to do when you’re filming Doogie?

They really enjoy hiking. They made Manoa Falls, a great place for hiking. A lot of people have done it and Koko Head. It’s another great hiking place.

Any places or things you recommend people see or do?

I recommend driving around the islands. There’s nothing more beautiful than that, and it’s just a nice way to explore. One of my favorite shaved ice places is Snow Island in Kailua [on Oahu]. My dad grew up working at the grocery store that used to be connected [to it]. It’s famous because Barack Obama frequents it. One of my mom’s favorite things to do is stay right here in Waikiki; at Moana Surfrider, they have these amazing rocking chairs on the front porch, where my mom and I sit and just people watch. One of my favorite hotels is Kahala [in Honolulu]; having breakfast with the waves right there was breathtaking. And many hotels have nightlife services like Halekulani.

There is a plot point in White Lotus where one of the characters was very upset about tourists going to see traditional dance performances because of Hawaii’s colonial history.

To me, these issues are complex and it’s all down to how you approach it. It’s good that we’re all having these conversations, and it’s necessary. But if you approach it with respect and want to learn, I think it can be beneficial. I think there was a hula confusion – which when it started, it was almost like a form of prayer – when you saw a hula girl on the dashboard. I don’t know that is treat it with so much respect.

The edited interview is long and clear.
