How to keep your muscles healthy and young?

This is the first study to investigate the workings of muscles, stem cells and nerves in humans, say researchers from the University of Copenhagen.

“This is the first study in humans to find that lifelong recreational exercise can delay some of the harmful effects of aging. Using biopsies of muscle tissue, we found a positive effect of exercise on the general aging population, which was missing in lead author Casper Soendenbroe from the journal.

They found that the elderly remained physically active throughout their adult lives, whether by participating in endurance exercises, ball games, playing racquet sports, swimming, cycling , running and/or rowing have higher numbers of muscle stem cells, also known as satellites. cells in their muscles.

These cells are important for muscle regeneration and long-term growth and protection against nerve decay.

In the study, 46 men took part and were divided into three groups: sedentary young adults (15), elderly lifelong exercisers (16) and sedentary older adults (15).

They performed a heavy resistance exercise, sat in a mechanical chair, and performed a knee extension to assess muscle function. The amount of force generated has been measured. Blood samples were taken and muscle biopsies were analyzed from both legs.

The researchers found that older adults who exercised throughout their lives outperformed both older adults and sedentary adults.

Importantly, research shows that even a small amount of exercise has long-term effects, when it comes to protecting against age-related decline in muscle function.

“This is an encouraging finding that could hopefully motivate more people to engage in an activity they enjoy. We still have a lot to learn about the mechanisms and interactions between nerves and muscles and how these change as we age. Our research will take us one step closer,” said Soendenbroe.
