CODA made history at the 2022 SAG Awards for being the first film with an mostly deaf cast to win best actor, and star Troy Kotsur won the Supporting Actor award. Best performance, making him the first deaf person to be nominated for and win the only acting award.
Director Sian Heder’s Apple film received Oscars for best picture and best supporting actor (for Kotsur), and it won several awards at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, including The Grand Jury of America Grand Prize, the Drama Audience Award of America, Best Director for the American Stage, and the Special Jury Cast Award. The film also broke records when it sold $25 million for Apple TV+ at Sundance.
Based on the 2014 French film La Famille Bélier, CODA follows a blue-collar fishing family made up of mostly deaf members. (The title of the film is an acronym for “child of a deaf adult(s)” and refers to someone raised by one or more deaf parents or guardians.)
Emilia Jones plays Ruby Rossi, the only hearing member of her family to act as an interpreter for her mother (Oscar Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin), father (Kotsur) and brother (Daniel Durant). Tensions arose in the Rossi family as Ruby was torn between pursuing her passion for singing at Berklee College of Music and staying close to home to support the family.
The groundbreaking film has been praised for ushering in a new era of disability representation. Matin recently told The Hollywood Reporter, “To have a hearing actor play a deaf character as if it were a costume, I think we’ve moved beyond that point now. … We are talking about a new generation of viewers. ”
