Huawei, ZTE to Face Tighter Restrictions Following Unanimous US Senate Vote

The US Senate voted unanimously on Thursday to approve laws to stop firms resembling Huawei or ZTE which are deemed safety threats from receiving new tools licenses from US regulators.

The Safe Tools Act, the most recent effort by the US authorities to crack down on Chinese language telecom and tech firms, was authorised final week by the US Home on a 420-4 vote, and now goes to President Joe Biden for his signature.

“Chinese language state-directed firms like Huawei and ZTE are recognized nationwide safety threats and don’t have any place in our telecommunications community,” Republican Senator Marco Rubio stated.

The measure would prohibit the Federal Communications Fee (FCC) from reviewing or issuing new tools licenses to firms on the FCC’s “Coated Tools or Companies Listing.”
