The first batch arrived last week and is exploding volleys of Kalashnikov rounds at ranges of secret beauty locations.

They narrowly escaped an air raid a few days before leaving.

“We think the Russian military knows we are coming here,” said a Ukrainian military instructor, who asked not to be named.

Lieutenant Joe Coombs, 24, from the 3rd Rifles Regiment, said: “Two themes across the board were training them to survive and training them to kill.”

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said hundreds of others, ages 18 to 55, arrived every day.

There is space for 2,400 at four secret locations in the North and South of England.

“Training issues,” he said at a store in the Northwest.

“When you go to war against Russia, you need to make sure you can be the best you can be.”

Up to 200 Ukrainian soldiers are killed every day, with around 1,000 wounded, in a war that has flared up since February.

The volunteers who signed up to fight were all civilians, and trained 16 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sergeant Dan Hayes, an Afghan veterinarian, said: “It’s heartbreaking.

“All these people are truck drivers or they work in quarries or they are shop owners.

“We ask them what their hobbies are and they say things like family barbecues or hanging out with the kids.

“It really tells the house how important this task is.”

One recruiter, a 34-year-old former e-commerce executive, told The Sun: “A few months ago, I was relaxing in my office and drinking some coffee.

The father of one child added: “It’s a really important opportunity for us to acquire the skills we need to fight and defend our country.”
