Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes Trailer introduces a very different Battle Royale

The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes takes us back more than six decades to when Katniss Everdeen fought in her first Hunger Games, and as we see in the first trailer released Thursday night, the The filmmaker has really given the film a very classic look.

The film’s art style, which tells the story of future President Snow mentoring a Hunger Games contestant when he was much younger, is radically different from the classic futuristic style of the original four films, showing everything stuff with an attractive original look- to mid-20th century aesthetic.

Check out the trailers here.

The trailer introduces all the major players – from Snow himself (Tom Blyth) to his mentor Lucy (Rachel Zegler), and up to Casca Highbottom by Peter Dinklage, the game’s creator, and Dr. Gaul (Viola Davis) intense. And we even get to meet Lucky Flickerman (Jason Schwartzman), perhaps a reference to Stanley Tucci’s Caesar Flickerman from previous films.

While it’s light on plot, that new aesthetic leads to some pretty interesting visuals. And the Hunger Games itself seems to take place in a smaller arena here – an arena unlike the lush jungle of the previous movies.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is directed by Francis Lawrence, who has taken over the helm of every Hunger Games movie except the first. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes hits theaters on November 17.
