Hyundai Palisade Road Test 2023: What did we miss?

After one year with Hyundai Palisade 2021 In auto blogIts long-term garage, it has proven to be the perfect car for our family, especially my wife’s daily driver. When hyundai Update Palisade For 2023, though, I’m starting to wonder what we’ve missed. I’ll have a chance to find out when one lands in my driveway in a week.

Here are the most interesting differences I noticed in the new version fencein order as I see them:

Look

Look, I didn’t buy the Palisade to show off, but I can’t help but notice the difference. The grille is the most obvious change, and bigger is not necessarily better. The lights and rear bumper are revised and there are new wheels. I think I like the older design overall, but it’s not different enough to really interest me. Small tweaks are essentially an obligation in any refresh, and it’s the actual updates that matter here.

Better door access

Our old Palisade has a button on the front door. You must press both to lock or unlock the door. With this new one, you can grab the handle and it will unlock. Instead of an actual button to press to lock it, it’s a square shaped touch button that you press to lock the door.

Now if only they added the same functionality to the rear door handles.

Digital HVAC Display

We still have the physical controls, but also a digital display between the HVAC dials. At first glance, it seems pointless since I just want to use those dials for adjustment. What’s important here, though, is that this feature means you don’t have to use the infotainment screen to adjust the rear climate control from the front. OK, I sold. However, I will still use the actual dials to adjust the temperature up front.

Rearview mirror camera

I love and cherish this supplement. I mentioned in review my first Palisade road trip What a boon for those times when the truck is loaded with cargo. During another Hyundai press tour, I was told that the people there had read that review and I wanted some changes coming. Apparently this is one of them, and they’re right; I highly recommend the rearview mirror camera option

This is a great version, too. You can adjust the brightness and even target latitude of the camera feed. Got a trailer you need to check out? You can point the camera up. Want to be able to admire the grille of the car behind you when the lights stop? Aim it down. This is a rare if possibly unique feature.

Lane-focused steering assist without cruise control

In our Palisade 2021, you’ll get a bit of lane-keeping assist when adaptive cruise control is off, but you have to enable that to use the actual lane-centering that helps steer you. through the bends. In the 23s, if the camera could find the lane, you could tap that little steering wheel button for steering assistance. Sorry, right? The lane centering technology is usually very bad. Actually, that’s not the case with Hyundai, that and so bright In the cars I’ve driven, and especially in big cars like the Palisade, the lane centering system works pretty well which can make driving a little less stressful.

Semi-automatic lane change

The ’23 Palisade can now be upgraded with Highway Driving Assist II. The sequel to the original HDA I system found on the upcoming Palisade will add adaptive cruise control and an automatic lane-changing lane-centering system. When the system is active, press the turn signal and if the shoreline is clear, the vehicle will help you steer into the next lane. It just slows down a lot more than I would like, so I still do it the old way and at my own faster speed.

HUD shows the location of cars around you

Instead of just letting you know when you’re behind another vehicle and your blind spot is occupied, the HUD shows the more precise location of the different cars it can see around you. So if there’s one in your blind spot and another one on the other side just past your front fender, you’ll see them represented as blocks around your virtual vehicle on the screen.

Ergo motion chair

Now drivers can get a massage in the Palisade. It’s not the best massage, and I don’t usually use that function when a better version is available, but it can help you feel refreshed for longer driving. The side latches are also adjustable. Alike Mercedes-BenzWith the new Palisade Multi-Contour seat, the side rails can tighten to better hold you in place as you switch modes or drive harder. It’s a neat trick, but I’m not sure how useful it is in a sluggish SUV compared to a small car. sport car.

Storage bag on the side of the captain’s seat

My son spotted small cargo nets on either side of the captain’s seat. They’re just an extra place for passengers to stow, which is always handy, especially when trying to keep children in for longer periods of time. road trip.

New parking camera view

Does this (see picture below) do anything for you? I don’t find it particularly game-changing, but there are probably some parking situations that deserve it. The simple, top-down surround view is good enough for me, providing all the information I need when parking.

USB-C port

There are still old-fashioned USB-A ports, but some of them have been replaced by the newer USB-C format. As more devices in my life convert to this format, I want to see that the car is future-proof for them.

Heated third row seats

The rear seats are now heated. I don’t bring people back there often enough to care.

phone as key

I forgot that this is currently an available future and didn’t get a chance to test it, but it’s something I often wish was included in our own Palisade. Sometimes, I don’t want to run into the house (and take off my snow boots, find the fob, and put on my boots) when I’m late to pick up the kids, or if I just want to get something out of the car.

Final Judgment

The 2023 Hyundai Palisade clearly feels familiar compared to previous model years. We’re not sure about the styling updates, but there are plenty of other changes that really make a difference. They’re not big enough for us to race to replace my wife’s 2021 model with a 2023 refresh, and some updates don’t make much of a difference. However, the difference-makers do so because Hyundai has given some legitimate thought to how they can help drivers. We look forward to using them and any new innovations incorporated by then, when we purchase our next vehicle from the Hyundai family.
