“I can’t help but feel the urgency” – The Hollywood Reporter

Nazanin Boniadi first attended a rally in her hometown of Tehran, Iran, before she was born.

“I was in my mother’s womb,” explains The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star while delivering the keynote speech Wednesday during the Academy Luncheon for Women presented by Chanel. “She was 19 years old and bravely joined tens of thousands of protesters against the nascent theocracy. My parents recognized the dangers of raising girls in an increasingly oppressive social, political, and legal environment, especially against women and girls. Although they were granted political asylum in London when I was three weeks old, the challenges women in Iran face are deeply ingrained in my mind.”

Going through the Iranian Revolution – at least in the womb – set the stage for a lifetime of activism, and Boniadi says supporting Iranian women has been a passion for the past 14 years. But nothing compares to what is happening in this country after Mahsa Amini’s death, she said. The 22-year-old woman was arrested by the government’s “ethical police” for not wearing a headscarf, and she died under mysterious circumstances. Since September, protests have rocked Iran as citizens defy the country’s strict moral codes and push for social change.

“Although Iran is accustomed to uprisings almost once a decade, no protests in the past can compare in terms of intensity or magnitude to current protests, in which for the first time since the establishment of the theocracy, people actively fought back to defend themselves against security forces. ,” Boniadi explained. “But the most unprecedented of these protests is that they are led by women.”

The role of women – in activism, art, culture, business and more – was a popular topic on Wednesday as more than 100 guests sat on the airy terrace at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles. The celebration focuses on the fifth anniversary of the Academy Women’s Gold Fellowship, a program that supports emerging authors.

This year’s laureates, Karishma Dube and Oleksandra Kostina, were honored in a program attended by Academy president Janet Yang and presenter Marlee Matlin spinning on the podium to deliver brief remarks in front of a crowd that included filmmakers and actors such as Lucy Boynton, Janicza Bravo, Ruth Carter, Kerry Condon, Claire Foy, Sanaa Lathan, Leslie Mann, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Maria Schrader, Tessa Thompson, Rita Wilson, etc.

Many bold-faced guests have dressed in Chanel, a home with a deep commitment to cinema, film events and programs, such as the Academy’s Golden Scholarship, which focuses on women, a legacy that can be traced back to the founder of the house, the iconic Gabrielle Chanel.

And while the trendy LA rooftop lunch might seem a far cry from the uprising in Iran, Boniadi ended her speech with a call to action by asking women to rally using their platform to speak up and speak up.

“I can’t help but feel the urgency of engaging in sisterhood with Iranian women. We will certainly be stronger in accomplishing our goals when we unite on a global level,” the actress said, encouraging the audience to amplify the voice of the Iranian people on the Internet. social networks by sharing information from trusted activists and organizations. demonstrations and connections with Iranian activists.

She continued: “I am asking you, our larger arts community, will you join us in the fight for a free Iran? Because we owe it to ourselves to come together and support our freedom to create and speak up.”

With that Boniadi, ended his speech and left the stage. When she returned to her seat, Boniadi was greeted with a standing ovation and hugs from Yang and powerful agent Lorrie Bartlett, her representative at the CAA, showing her that The answer to her question was a “yes”.
