Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic lost his case to the Australian government’s decision to cancel his visa for the second time.

The 20-time Grand slam champion was scheduled to play compatriot Serb Miomir Kecmanovic on Monday.

According to experts, although Sunday’s decision is a step backwards, it is not the end of the road.

Legal options: According to Abul Rizvi, former deputy secretary of immigration, Djokovic can still apply for leave to appeal to Australia’s top court, although there is not much time left for him to do so before the tournament begins.

“He can appeal for symbolic reasons, but few other reasons,” said Rizvi, who added that Djokovic would be detained until he leaves.

Other Visas: There’s also a chance Djokovic could get a bridging visa, according to Maria Jockel, immigration law specialist at BDO Australia, this could allow him to compete while making arrangements to leave Australia.

But there is a hitch – visas can only be issued by the immigration minister, who canceled his visa on Friday. The court can order Djokovic to be granted a bridging visa while the case is further appealed, but the final decision rests with the immigration minister.
