When you think about fashion Week, your mind may automatically switch to clothes. While clothing is certainly the focal point, with more and more beauty brands entering fashion week, beauty is becoming an increasingly important aspect for designers to consider. Beauty can help designers express their vision and complement or contrast clothing to enhance their message. And just as the clothes on display make up the upcoming trends, so does the beauty we see at fashion week.

From behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week This season, I watched the beauty trends unfold before my eyes. While some beauties, such as French manicures and sleek buns, they seem to be continuing to fortify themselves with zeitgeist, newer trends, such as goth inspired charm and metal accents, making it feel like they’ve just broken into the scene. Keep reading for the best beauty trends I saw this season at New York Fashion Week—along with some of the key products that were actually used to create them.

Clearly, Wednesday’s core is still here — and you can say goodbye to the “clean girl” aesthetic that dominated 2022. This year we’re going to be totally hooked, honey. Rodarte caught up with the trend with black eyeliner and lipstick. Nars makeup lead James Kaliardos told Who What Wear: “We’re doing gothic fairies… more gothic than fairy tale. “For this show, we really wanted bold and intense makeup, one line eyeliner with a bold black lip or a blue lip.”

When it comes to this season, the theme is ROYGBV—any and every color in the rainbow is fair game. From two-tone lips in Kim Shui to blue and black lips in Rodarte, we see nearly every possible combination.

Even the classic red gets a twist this season. At Alice+Olivia, the theme was Americana, but Elyse Reneau, managing director of global beauty at Too Faced, took the topic to the next level. Braids are nothing new, but this season we’ve seen them reimagined. From the floor-to-ceiling braids at the Head of State to the more sculpturally repetitive braids at Ulla Johnson and Tia Adeola, braids are entering their weird era.

At Head of State, global design lead artist Oribe Kien Hoang created braids that reflect the collection’s intention to convey the emigration journey of designer father Taofeek Abijako from Lagos, Nigeria. Hoang chose Lagos-relevant sculptural braids to create a flowing border.

Head of State isn’t the only show that draws inspiration from hair from a particular place or time — Tia Adeola does the same. Cutler Salon with Bread Beauty’s Mike Martinez said: “This season, we took inspiration from the iconic ’90s Atlanta style, adding length and flair to the model’s hair with a section of hair. Extensions and curls are shaped with bold gel. “The models chosen perfectly embody this look and we are delighted to pay homage to the film Black. BAPS style while incorporating our own unique twists.
