“I will forever be grateful for that conversation.”
Barbie, an Argentine mother, shared how Lionel Messi helped her 8-year-old son Tommy during a difficult time in his life.
Tommy was diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) when he was just eight years old, the same condition that Messi had as a child. Barbie has helped Tommy by drawing similarities to Messi, hoping that will give him strength.
Her story, originally shared on Instagram and translated by Twitter user @JmenaJuani, begins:
“I bought a poster of Messi; We stuck it on his bedroom wall. We told him that he would treat him like his idol. And let him see that Lionel realizing his dream is not an obstacle. I know that this will be good for my son.”
Barbie contacted Messi’s father Jorge in 2010, and then-Barcelona forward nice to meet Tommy.
Messi, who has been on growth hormone for a long time, discussed at length the GHD treatment, telling Tommy if it would hurt and where the injection would take place. He also reassures little Tommy that everything will be fine.
“Messi told him that sometimes he was teased as ‘pulga’, that sometimes he wanted to be a giant. But being small also has its advantages, (you can be) more dexterous and agile,” added Barbie.
Messi, who was diagnosed with GHD at the age of 11, added to Tommy:
“At your age, I’m the same size as you.”
Tommy has grown up healthy and is now the same height as his idol Lionel Messi. His grateful mother, Barbie, concluded that she will forever be grateful to the superstar for chatting with her son:
“Because of all this, I prayed that on Sunday Messi would win the World Cup. I will forever be grateful for that conversation with my son. Thank you Messi, you are a giant. Barbie, Tommy’s mom,” her post ended.
