In addition to the GM and Sony EV projects, Honda also goes alone into solid state technology

Honda has established electric vehicle partnerships with General Motors and Sony, but the automaker has gone solo into solid-state battery technology.

According to a report from Ars Technica based on comments from executives during a media roundtable at Honda headquarters in Tokyo.

Shinji Aoyama, Honda’s global leader in electrification, said the automaker hopes to bring solid-state batteries into car production by the end of the decade, possibly by 2028 or 2029. The technology, which is also being pursued by other car and battery manufacturers, gets increased range and shorter charging times.

Honda Global CEO Toshihiro Mibe said at the roundtable that the automaker has not yet decided which vehicle will be the first to use solid-state batteries, but added that he would like to see them used. Used on motorcycles as well as cars. Honda is expected to launch 10 new electric motorcycles globally by 2025 — including some in the United States — and in 2021 it joined a coalition of Japanese motorcycle manufacturers to develop bike battery swap standards.

But before solid-state batteries can make their way into any vehicle, the Honda researchers need to address the longevity issue. The automaker has found that its test solid-state cells are particularly sensitive to lithium filaments, the spikes of matter that form over time and can cause short circuits during charging.

Honda’s solution was to add layers of fabric that grips the solid electrolyte (where the term “solid state”) comes from to prevent dendrites from forming without affecting battery performance — at least in theory. theory. The materials are combined with a roll press that also allows for thinner layers to be created, Honda claims. The process still needs testing before Japan’s pilot production line opens in 2024, but if successful, it could be expanded to other global facilities — perhaps including plans by the company. Honda’s motobike Ohio Battery Factory.

Other automakers – such as BMW and Ford – are experimenting with solid-state battery technology developed by outside startups, but Honda isn’t the only one developing the technology on its own. Nissan also sees solid-state batteries as the key to production Electric SUV and pickup truck possibleand it is working on its own proprietary solid state cells.

While Honda is keeping this research intact, it plans to launch a series of electric vehicles developed with partners. First come 2024 Honda Prologue SUV, built on GM’s Ultium components suite. Honda is also working with GM to develop a shared architecture that underpins millions Affordable EVscoming in 2027. They will have a smaller cell format than the one used in the Prologue, Acura ZDX, Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq and more coming soon.

Honda has yet to reveal details on how much technology will be shared with the Honda-Sony joint venture announced earlier this year, but for the first time. Honda-Sony EVs will be manufactured in 2025 in North America at a Honda facility.
