In “Passing,” Costume Designer Marci Rodgers avoids fashion clichés and draws from her Chicago roots

Adapted from the 1929 novel Nella Larsen, “Passing” tells the story of Irene and Clare, two childhood friends who reconnect after years of separation and become increasingly involved in each other’s lives – and their insecurity. Both are white African-American women, but Irene (played by Tessa Thompson) accepts her African-American identity and marries a black doctor; On the other hand, Clare (played by Ruth Negga) chooses to cross the line of color and marry a rich, racist white man and live like a white woman.
