Before Pakistan Speed pitcher Aaqib Javed has stated that Team India would be extremely relieved at the prospect of not facing Shaheen Afridi inside 2022 Asian Cup. The left-hander was ruled out for the entire tournament due to a knee injury, with Mohammad Husnain named instead.
In the previous meeting of arch-rivals, the 22-year-old broke down India’s top spot. Having won the title of India’s top 3 famous players, Afridi was named the Man of the Match as Pakistan recorded a memorable 10 times victory at the 2021 T20 World Cup. Indian boxers have continued to struggle against left-handers, with the likes of Reece Topley and Obed McCoy recently probing their weak points.
Talking about how Afridi’s absence affects the upcoming competition between the two neighboring countries, Javed said in an interaction with Geo:
“India is very relieved. What Amir did to them, what Shaheen did to them, that was their only threat. They will only lose when their top order drops early. Because when Kohli comes in and his morale drops early, it’s going to be quite difficult for him to lose form and be under a lot of pressure.”
Mohammad Amir has also proven to be a difficult client to deal with Indian smashers over the years. The fiery left-hander has plagued the Blue Team in their encounters at the 2016 Asian Cup, T20 World Cup 2016 and most famously at the 2017 Champions Trophy Final.
Waqar Younis has stated earlier that Afridi’s absence is a huge relief for Team India
Legendary Pakistan tennis player Waqar Younis has also expressed earlier that Shaheen Afridi’s absence is a huge relief for India ahead of the tournament. The young fisherman suffered an injury during the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. He has been included in the team for the ODI series against the Netherlands and the Asian Cup, hoping to recover in time.
When asked about Shaheen Afridi’s absence from the tournament, Team India vice-captain KL Rahul said in a press conference yesterday:
“If he plays, it will be a good experience for us. Unfortunately, he was injured.”
The team led by Babar Azam will face India in the opening match of the 2022 Asian Cup at Dubai International Stadium on August 28 (Sunday).
