Ineos Grenadier hydrogen FCEV delayed due to lack of infrastructure

Ineos says it has completed the technical requirements to build a fully operational hydrogen fuel cell electric version of the Grenadier and ute wagon – but has stalled due to lack of infrastructure support .

Talking to auto expert at the launch of the Grenadier wagon in Scotland this week, commercial director of Ineos Automotive Mark Tennant says the brand is very confident in hydrogen energy but lacks the necessary confidence that the infrastructure will be built globally.

“Fuel cell electric vehicles are for us the right zero-emissions option for this type of vehicle, but because of the infrastructure issues – not any – we cannot bet completely on fuel cells until we’re more confident that people can fill it,” said Tennant.

“We will have a fuel cell vehicle by the middle of this year, it has nothing to do with whether fuel cell technology is there or not. [but there is no infrastructure].”

There are only seven hydrogen filling stations in the UK. There are currently only three fueling stations in Australia that offer hydrogen for sale to the public, and even for these stations, prior contact is required.

Hydrogen FCEV sold here is Hyundai NEXO and Toyota Miraiwith a focus on the fleet.

Ineos as a company has made a name for itself in the world of chemicals and actually produces hundreds of tons of hydrogen per year, which explains why the company has partnered with the likes of Hyundai to develop its FCEV capabilities.

As it stands, no powertrain has been locked down for the Grenadier FCEV yet and whether it will ever enter mass production remains to be seen. The real focus seems to be on slightly smaller battery electric car Launched in 2026.

The Ineos Grenadier wagon will arrive in Australia around March this year before the ute is launched later this year with local deliveries expected as early as 2024.

It is unlikely that even if the FCEV version of the Grenadier goes into production, our market will embrace it.
