INS Vikrant ready to make waves on September 2 | India News

KOCHI: She is a majestic tiger, although currently has no teeth. She will become menacing as she steadily grows fangs within the next year, ready to prowl and growl in the sea.
Indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) weighing 45,000 tons, the largest warship ever built in India for around Rs 20,000 crore at Cochin Shipyard, is absolutely sea worthy to be commissioned as INS Vikrant via PM Narendra Modi on September 2nd.
But the IAC will be fully combat-ready once the MiG-29K supersonic fighter completes important test flights from its spacious deck and it is equipped with all its high-tech weapons. such as the Israeli Barak-8 surface fighter with a range of 80 km. – surface-to-air missile systems, circa mid-2023.
With the Dhruv testing, Sea King and Chetak helicopters have ended, the IAC is currently preparing for the MiG-29K trials which will begin in October-November. Tests of the newly purchased MH-60 “Romeo” submarine hunting helicopter from the US as well as the Russian-made Kamov-31 early warning helicopter are also underway.
“In the first sortie of the IAC’s extensive sea trials, we had 22 helicopter crashes on deck. Gradually we will increase her fighter integration and fleet integration… It will happen sooner rather than later,” said captain IAC Commodore Vidhyadhar Harke told TOI on Wednesday.
The inherent strength of the carrier strike group (CBG) is its ability to detect and neutralize emerging threats from afar. A CBG can also travel more than 400 knots in a day to demonstrate raw combat power and ‘visible deterrence’ over a large area.
It is not uncommon that China is currently building a fourth aircraft carrier after “launching” a third aircraft carrier, weighing more than 80,000 tons, Fujian, in June. However, China is relatively new to the technology. The technique of operating a fighter from an aircraft carrier is very complicated. In contrast, India has been operating “flat” since the arrival of the first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant from the UK in 1961.
With the IAC taking her name, the 1,700-member crew is eager to set sail. Commodore Harke said: “The IAC will significantly enhance our naval capabilities to control the seas and protect vital sea lines of communication, in keeping with India’s upward trajectory in the growth of the seas. economic growth,” said Commodore Harke.
The IAC is 262 meters long and 15 stories high, with a flight deck level with two football fields with angled ski jumps, a feat of engineering and shipbuilding. India has now joined a select group of countries such as the US, Russia, China, France and the UK that can design, build and integrate an aircraft carrier themselves.
“It is an important achievement. With an overall native content of 76%, the IAC is five to seven times larger in size than any warship ever built in India,” said Cochin Shipyard, CMD Madhu S Nair.
The common downside is that IAC is far superior to India’s existing aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, acquired from Russia for $2.33 billion in November 2013, with another $2 billion spent on 45 MiG-29K, on a number of properties from propulsion to flying operations.
For example, the IAC has two ‘side’ aircraft lifts to transport fighter jets and helicopters to the flight deck compared to INS Vikramaditya’s ‘internal lifts’. “The side lifts, with a capacity of 30 tons each, do not disrupt flight operations,” said flight deck officer, Lieutenant Colonel Commander in Chief Divyansh Singh speak.
Once the fighter is on the flight deck, it can take off within seconds. “The IAC is capable of carrying around 30 fighters and helicopters with different configurations depending on the mission,” said Lt Col. Ajay Singha MiG-29K pilot.
“Landing at a normal airport is very easy. This is a floating airport with limited space, and it moves up and down as the ship rolls. I am eagerly waiting for the day to land and take off from this flight deck,” he added.
That day is not too far away. The IAC, as INS Vikrant, will represent India’s sovereign territory flying over the high seas, with the ability to quickly transform into a formidable attack platform by launching its fighters. and other weapons against enemies at a glance.
