Inside Pride: Exploring the lesser-known part of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ acronym

June 1 marks the beginning of Pride month internationally, including many Canadian communities such as Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto.

Some Canadian cities celebrate Pride at other times of the year, as is the case with Halifax in July, Fredericton, Vancouver and Montreal in August and Calgary in September.

While the rainbow flag and the word “Pride” are becoming more commonplace – Global News is looking beyond acronyms at some of the lesser known brands.

As part of our new series – Inner pride – we will spend 6 months exploring issues related to 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities and the labels they represent.

We’ll explore the acronym 2SLGBTQQIA+ – which stands for two souls, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gay and questionable, alternate and asexual – and look at the importance importance of labels and when they can cause harm.

In many of our stories, we’ll explore the various stigmas, myths, misconceptions, erasures, and cults that can make the oddball feel like they don’t have a community of their own. .

We’ll examine some of the stereotypes about being gay or lesbian, exploring stereotypes that influence women’s acceptance of mobility.

What is 2 S or Two Spirit – and how is it different from a non-binary system? We’ll dive into the lesser-known part of that acronym.

We will also explore how Indigenous cultures saw gender mobility prior to contact with European colonists in North America.

When you’re not straight, but you’re also not gay – where do you fit in? And what is the difference between pansexuality and bisexuality? For that matter, how are bisexual men and women misunderstood not only in society but also in their own LGBTQ communities?

What about people who don’t fit the “pattern”? We’ll be looking at disability, based on the pop-culture weirdness often expressed by a white, CIS, figure.

And what about those of us who don’t feel sexual desire or love that isn’t pure? We’ll delve into the sense of asexuality and aroma in a hyper-realist society, the feeling of being left out of the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Finally, we will explore the barriers and challenges transgender people in Canada face in accessing basic health care, hormone therapy, access to gender confirmation procedures and How the requirements differ from province to province.
