Insider reveals why Derek Carr chose Saints over Jets

More information on why midfielder Derek Carr chose signal with the New Orleans Saints instead of the New York Jets.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Monday afternoon that “a source with knowledge of the situation” said Carr signed with the Saints because the signal caller was “much more comfortable” with the situation in New Orleans than with the situation with the Jets.

The source said: “Things are heating up with the Jets, but the Saints have always been the most active pursuers for the former. [Las Vegas Raiders] captain,” noted Florio. “The Saints were the first to pursue Carr, and they actually made a commercial offer to the Raiders on his previous contract. The Saints are the only ones who do that.”

Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network (h/t Kevin Patra) reported that Carr received a four-year, $150 million contract with a $100 million total guarantee from the Saints. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler speak on Sunday, Carr was “slightly inclined” to pick Jet at the time, but Florio speculates that the story may have been “leaked to promote Saints to neglect or quit.”

Carr probably won’t have any young New Orleans prospects keeping an eye on. That may not be the case for the Jets, as New York general manager Joe Douglas suggestion at the NFL Combine last week that he wants Carr to advise on the second draft overall pick of 2021 Zach Wilson.

Former NFL quarterback and current “The NFL Today” analyst Boomer Esiason speak that Carr was “concerned from the Jets’ point of view that Zach Wilson is here” and that Wilson’s status with the Jets might “be the highlight for” Carr.

However, maybe Carr doesn’t want to settle down when joining a team accused have Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers as their top pick this season. On Monday, Jets . insider Zack Rosenblatt belong to sport wrote that “The Jets have made it clear that Rodgers is their #1 target” and that “Carr doesn’t want to wait to make his move.”

It’s unknown when Rodgers will tell the Packers his plans for 2023. He could return to Green Bay, negotiate a deal with a team like the Jets, or retire four-time NFL Best Player.
