Instagram will soon test tall photos to be compatible with full-screen movie reels

The photo and video sharing platform Instagram may have paused its controversial redesign, but that doesn’t mean the company plans to stop focusing on full-screen content. In the weekly Ask Me Anything, CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed that Instagram will begin testing 9:16 super-tall photos “in a week or two.” “You can have a tall video but not a tall photo on Instagram. So we thought it might be a good idea to make sure we treat both equally,” Mosseri said.

The current, Instagram beyond about 4:5 when displaying the corresponding cropped vertical image. But introducing support for thinner, taller 9:16 shots will help them fill the entire screen as you scroll through the app’s feed. CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed that Instagram will be testing the feature during its weekly Ask Me Anything program.

Recently, Instagram drag that is TikTok-like redesign. Some photographers have criticized Instagram’s TikTok-like design for the way it forces all photos to appear awkwardly in a 9:16 frame. The new feed has also added overlay gradients to the bottom of the post to make the text easier to read. But that clashed with the original look of the photographer’s work.

During Instagram’s shaky redesign testing with users, Mosseri has repeatedly admitted that the full-screen experience isn’t ideal for snapshots. For now, Instagram still intends to introduce that super visual experience, but doesn’t mandate it on a large scale.
