International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital mutilation 2022: Investing Without Rest

This practice reflects profound gender inequalities and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls. It also violates their rights to health, physical integrity, inhuman or degrading treatment, and their right to life when the procedure results in death.

Theme 2022

The Pandemic caused by covid-19 interrupt the removal of all harmful activities including FGM. In response to this disruption, the United Nations has been adapting interventions to ensure the integration of FGM in post-pandemic response.

To promote the elimination of FGM, systematic and concerted efforts to engage the whole community and focus on human rights, gender equalitysexual education, and the needs of women and girls who suffer its consequences.

This year, the United Nations General Program came up with the theme 2022 “Accelerate investment to end female genital mutilation.” It calls on the global community to invest in programs that deliver services and respond to those affected and those at risk. It should also include the development and enforcement of legislation to eliminate FGM.

Empowering girls with access to education, health care and income opportunities could hasten the demise of this harmful practice with no known medical or health benefits.

Major Events

  • It is estimated that at least 200 million girls and women alive today have experienced some form of FGM globally. If this continues, an additional 15 million girls aged 15 to 19 will be subject to FGM by 2030.
  • This exercise is not healthy for girls and women.
  • FGM is mainly performed on young girls between the ages of birth and 15 years, with the highest prevalence in the Gambia, Mauritania and Indonesia.
  • FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women.
  • Health care providers are involved in this practice. This is called medicalization.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) opposes all types of FGM and health care provider FGM performance.
  • Treatment of health complications by FGM is estimated to cost $1.4 billion per year and is expected to grow to $2.3 billion by 2047 if no action is taken.
