Interstellar Travel: Strange New World uses footage from 2014 Ukrainian protests to represent alien unrest

When inventing history in a sci-fi story, using real-world archival footage can be an easy way to make the story relatable and at a scale that doesn’t make sense. rotation. The first episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds did exactly that, but with the odd choice to use footage from the Ukrainian protests to help tell the story of the civil unrest. of an alien planet (via Gizmodo).

The first episode, “New World,” takes Captain Pike and his crew to Kiley 279, home to a pre-war civilization during the conflict. Civilization is caught up in unrest, and the Enterprise team detects a news report about the protests. To simulate the conflict, however, the presenters used footage from the Ukraine protests that took place in 2013 and 2014, known as Euromaidan or Maidan Uprising. Protests have occurred across the country, especially in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. As Gizmodo notes, these protests will eventually culminate in a clash between civilians and police that will claim the lives of more than 100 protesters.

The episode also makes use of other archival footage – footage from the January 6 Uprising in the US capital is used to discuss the Second American Civil War and the Third World War. Additionally, the Ukrainian footage specifically described in the episode shows “ambitious elements” in the foreign government, implying that the protesters are, in this case, traitors to the nation. rather than fearful and angry citizens.

It’s not new for a Star Trek show to be political – they’ve been around since the very beginning. It’s also nothing new for a show that uses real-world footage for something like this. However, considering the current state of things in Ukraine, where Russian forces have been flooding the country for over a month, the timing and choice of shots give the film a particularly bad look.
