– Local history buffs will be excited to learn about an upcoming weekend honoring one of the most culturally and historically rich areas in North Carolina, the Outer Banks.

OBX History Weekend is scheduled from Wednesday, March 30 to Saturday, April 2 in Manteo. The weekend offers the most astute students of North Carolina heritage the chance to learn more about the exciting discoveries that have made this area a historian’s dream.

The theme for this weekend is “New Horizons Seekers” to pay tribute to the forerunners and explorers who have crossed paths with Outer Banks.

National Park Service staff at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and the Wright Brothers National Monument will host educational tours and talks during the annual event. now in a groundbreaking presentation.

The weekend will include an international symposium, exhibitions and a variety of tours. They will provide an opportunity for scholars to present new information, adding context and perspective.

On Wednesday, March 30, the first day of OBX History Weekend, the public can listen to and participate in talks and educational tours from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Calendar Venue. Fort Raleigh National Monument and the Wright Brothers National Monument.

The symposium honors those who find, invent, dream and pioneer whose path includes External Banking. Symposium presentations will be held at the Gazebo Theater of Fort Raleigh National Historic Site at the northern end of Roanoke Island, the Billy Mitchell Airport of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Frisco and the House Singing Pioneer in Manteo.

  • Symposium Day 1 (March 31): Thomas Harriot: A respected Roanoke naturalist, astronomer, mathematician, ethnologist, translator, and settler. The presentation will also include the achievements of Harriot’s associates Sir Walter Raleigh and John Dee.
  • Symposium Day 2 (April 1): Native Americans, the Fates of Missing Colonists, and General Billy Mitchell: Day Two features sessions at two locations, one on a symposium on Native Americans & the Fate of the Missing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Lost Colony’s Indoor Gazebo Theater at Fort Raleigh. Another General Billy Mitchell symposium begins at 9 a.m. at the Budleigh Street Pioneer Theater in Manteo with a 2 p.m. field trip to Billy Mitchell Airport in Frisco at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
  • Day 3 Symposium: Ask Questions about Aviators linked to External Banks – learn more about the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earnhart, Chuck Yeager and others at the Gazebo Theater in Fort Raleigh.
