Investigators are looking into the possibility of distracted driving following a fatal crash northeast of Des Moines. One-year-old Ian Venales died Tuesday night in a crash on I-80/35 near Northeast 14th Street. The trouble started Tuesday when a motorcycle crashed just east of East Mixmaster on Interstate 80. Traffic began to reverse west on the interstate shortly after 5 p.m. Wes Breckenridge, former Wes Breckenridge Iowa. law enforcement officer, was driving with when a vehicle crashed into him. Before that, just a split second, a tractor-trailer rammed into the car that hit him. “I was hit from behind. Didn’t see it coming,” said Breckenridge. Bangowa Patrol Sergeant. Alex Dinkla describes what happened in the accident. “A pickup came in too fast. Ending a rear-end collision not of one vehicle but pushing it into another vehicle. In essence, vehicle-centricity is like being sandwiched between a car and a pickup,” says Dinkla. “Realize how important it is to focus on what you’re doing and not get distracted. A tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of the vehicle, killing the boy and injuring his father.
The trouble started Tuesday when a motorcycle crashed just east of East Mixmaster on Interstate 80. Traffic began backing west on the interstate shortly after 5 p.m.
Wes Breckenridge, a former Iowa law enforcement officer, was driving with him when he was hit by a car. Moments earlier, a tractor-trailer crashed into a small car, killing him.
“I was hit from behind. Didn’t see it coming,” said Breckenridge.
Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla describes what happened in the crash.
“A semi-final is going so fast. Ending a rear-end collision not of one vehicle but pushing it into another vehicle. In essence, the center vehicle is like being sandwiched between a car and a pickup truck,” says Dinkla.
“Realize the importance of staying focused on what you’re doing and not getting distracted. When traffic slows or speeds up just be aware of that and be careful, so we don’t have a tragedy like this happening,” Breckenridge said.
The truck driver is from Los Angeles and has not been charged in the incident.
