IPL 2022: Aakash Chopra thinks all-round MI will be released after the forgettable season

Former Indian hitter Aakash Chopra feels that Mumbai Indians (MI) will not hold back West Indies multi-talented person Kieron Pollard give Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.

Pollard, 35, who recently announced his international retirement, has had a terrifying run-in with the bat. He played 11 IPL 2022 games, where he scored only 144 runs averaging 14.40 and strike rate of 107.46.

The writing on the wall is dedicated to the Windies whiteball legend as he was dropped from the XI for the final few games of the season.

Pollard’s poor performance coincided with MI’s worst ever performance at the IPL as they finished last in the 10-team league, winning just four of their 14 matches. Looking forward to next season, Chopra has picked out a few names he feels Mumbai should launch. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said:

“I think we got to see the last of Kieron Pollard. ₹ 6 crore will be released if they do not hold him. I think they might as well let Murugan Ashwin (₹ 1.6 crore) go. I’m not sure about Jaydev Unadkat (₹1.3 crore) but they can definitely say goodbye to Tymal Mills (₹1.5 crore). ”

Shifting focus to the positives, Chopra selected young hitter Tilak Varma as the franchise’s featured performer for the season. Complimenting the 19-year-old, he said:

“He was absolutely brilliant. He took the opportunity to prepare the order and deliver it. He is an investment in the future. He’s got a very good temper and it doesn’t look like he’ll have a second season of blues. In addition, Mumbai also did not show enough confidence in Tim David. But when they did, he showed his talent.”

Varma finished the season with 397 runs in 14 games for an average of 36.09 and an attack rate of 131.02. David had 186 runs in eight games with a splash strike rate of 216.28.

“It’s a very multidimensional team” – Aakash Chopra on a major weakness in team MI

Concluding his thoughts on Mumbai’s squad for IPL 2022, Chopra thinks the defense is in good shape but what the team lacks are all-round good players. He explained:

“There is no problem with hitting the ball like that. The problem is the lack of comprehensive people. It’s a very multidimensional team. Batters don’t bowl, bowlers don’t bat. That’s where they were bolted. Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, and Pollard have done this work before but it is not happening now”.

Both Krunal and Hardik were released by Mumbai ahead of the 2022 IPL auction. While the former was purchased by the Lucknow franchise, the latter was selected by Gujarat from the draft list and named as captain.

Hardik led his new team to the IPL 2022 finals, winning rave reviews for his leadership.
