Britney’s back, asshole.
After weeks of teasing, nostalgic cover art, and a Messy debut at a French restaurant, Elton John Published “Hold me tighter“His new collaboration with Britney Spears that officially ended her six-year musical drought.
And it’s a refreshing drink. Spears’ collaborative track record isn’t always stellar — for every Madonna and Rihanna smash she has, there’s an unfortunate Iggy Azalea or G-Eazy blunder. Thankfully, this is a winner getting Spears back in a familiar club, only to slightly dampen the robo-Britney vocal effects that have plagued her post-Power-off released and instead unlocked the deeper register that we (eventually) heard on her last studio album, the underrated 2016 glory.
Her vocals here are relatively subdued, but she’s a perfect fit for John, as pop royalty deliver the beautiful chorus of “Tiny Dancer,” filtered through a disco club lens. Euro. this is not Russell Hammond sings melancholy to “Little Dancer” in the morning after an acid-fuelled typing session. This is similar to what happened the night before, when he was inspired to scream “I’m a golden god!” from a rooftop. In other words, it fun. Cool weather. Excitement, even, especially when Spears released some playful commercials and a few of her iconic lines of “baby” and “mmm-yeah.”
Much as “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix), “John’s successful 2021 collaboration with Dua Lipa, “Hold Me Closer” is a smooth mix of classic Elton tunes. The new song features the aforementioned “Little Dancer” chorus, while the lines are excerpted from “The OneThe poignant, piano-driven title track from his 23rd studio album, released in 1992.
And that’s where we get some insight into this new collaboration. The One is John’s first album after he recovered from drug and alcohol addiction. Singer John Rein’s manager told LA time in 1992, “He was scared to make the album because he didn’t make a sober album [in some time]. “John then explained to Rolling Stone, “I’m used to profiling under the haze of alcohol or drugs. And here I am, 100% sober, so it’s been tough. “
He eventually returned to composing and completing the album, returning him to pop stardom and becoming his first Top 10 album in the United States since 1976. It also marked the beginning. of a prime time in his career during the early ’90s, when he wrote and performed the Oscar-winning soundtrack for Disney’s Lion King and back to the top of the album and singles charts.
It’s a real comeback for John, and it’s impossible not to hope the same can happen soon for Spears, who… Nightmarish 13 years of preservation was eventually terminated in November 2021. “Hold Me Closer” was her first new music release since her 2016 Tinashe collaboration “Slumber Party” (though some other songs— “Mood Ring”, “Swimming In the Stars” and “Matches” featuring the Backstreet Boys — released as singles in 2020 to coincide with glory reissued). In other words, she prepares for her own return.
Whether “Hold Me Closer” serves as a launch pad for her pop revival remains to be seen — especially since we don’t even know if that’s what she wants. . Ahead of Friday’s release appeared to be a tough one for the singer, who abruptly deleted her Instagram account on Wednesday night and admitted the next day on Twitter that she was feeling ” Overload”.
“My first song in 6 years!!!! It’s great that I’m singing with one of the most classic men of our time… @eltonofficial !!!! I’m a bit overwhelmed… that’s a big deal for me!!! I am meditating more and learning my space is precious and precious!!! ” she writesadd another tweet, “I want to be fearless like when I was young and not be so scared and scared. … I choose happiness and joy today!!! “
Whatever the pursuit of “happiness and joy” is for Spears, hopefully she can rest easy knowing that “Hold Me Closer” has brought the same feelings of joy to her fans. Britney is eager for comfort hearing her voice on a new song (and a danceable song to boot!). Heaven knows it’s been too long.
