Is Ibiza expensive? Prices for rooms, food and taxis are increasing

A beachfront restaurant charges 30 euros ($30) for a burger.

A large sunbed at an upscale beach club can cost 500 euros in August.

And a table at a “VIP” nightclub can be in the thousands.

Although Spain is often thought of as a reasonably priced travel destination, the Spanish island of Ibiza has long been known as a place of high life.

“The pricing is silly,” said Ben Pundole, a luxury hotel consultant and longtime Ibiza guest. “After 23 years in New York, I can only compare it to the Hamptons at the height of [the] Season.”

Still, Ibiza’s visitors are happy to spend big, Pundole said.

“Ibiza is expensive, it’s always been expensive,” he said. “But people are willing to pay.”

Price increase

While hippies are drawn to Ibiza because of its gossip”magnetism“shaken in the 1960s, it is thought that British-Australian Tony Pike put the island on the map when he opened the Pikes Hotel, now known as Pikes Ibizain 1980. The small hotel turned a 500-year-old estate in the hills into a party paradise.

Pike’s rich and famous friends, such as Freddie Mercury, George Michael, and Kylie Minogue, have stayed at the hotel – and it remains a draw for its guest rooms, restaurants and dance floor.

The 1980s also saw the rise of clubs like Amnesia, Space (now home of Hi Ibiza) and Pacha, with the latter now charging 13 euros ($13) for a regular can of Coca-Cola. Since then, more clubs have opened, including Ushuaia, named the third best club in the world in 2019 by the International Nightlife Association.

A can of Coca-Cola at the VIP table at Ibiza’s Pacha nightclub costs $13, while large bottles cost around $500.

Pundole says restaurants, clubs, vacation rentals and taxis have all experienced significant price increases this year.

“It’s an island, it’s seasonal, businesses are making up for lost revenue for two years, there are supply chain issues and pent-up demand. [post pandemic] is huge,” he said.

Indeed, the amount tourists visiting the Balearic Islands have increased by 300% According to the National Statistics Institute of Spain.

‘Establishment charm’

Carolyn Addison, head of product for luxury travel agency Black Tomato, says Ibiza’s reputation as an upscale destination has grown over several decades. She told CNBC by phone: “It’s kind of… established glamor. So there’s a lot of expensive offers,” she told CNBC.

“You’d have to trace it back to the ’60s when there was a bunch of… hippie drifting,” she said. “Because that crowd can get older, richer, more famous, [it] defined the island in a new way. “

A six-night trip organized by Black Tomato starts from around £6,100 ($7,260) per person, including accommodation, breakfast and a one-day private yacht charter (prices do not include flights).

Addison said Six Senses Ibiza is very popular with Black Tomato customers. Luxurious hotel announced the addition of 19 private residences and two “houses” in June.

The castles cost about $16,000 per night in the summer, according to the hotel’s website. Guests have access to the spa, kids’ club and daily activities like kayaking and cliff jumping. Each hotel comes with a “Guest Experience Creator” who can organize nightclub entry and boat trips, according to the hotel.

What’s new in this year’s Six Senses is Beach Cavea venue with a restaurant, live music space, recording studio and six suites with extra-large beds, near the town of Portinatx on the north coast of Ibiza.

Pundole, the creative director of Beach Caves, describes the area as having “a distinct vibe” and calls it “curious, mystical, as hedonistic and bohemian as anywhere you’ve been. imaginable.” Beach Caves suites start at 1,565 euros a night in the summer.

This year also saw luxury hotel group Mandarin Oriental take over management of Tagomago, a private island off the east coast of Ibiza. The entire island is available to rent for around 30,000 euros a night during high season, including private villas, chefs, concierge, housekeepers, villa owners and yacht captains, according to a document advertisement.

Luca Finardi, managing director of Mandarin Oriental Exclusive Homes, said Tagomago’s clientele includes “many high-end individuals from around the world.”

Luxury needs

When asked why Ibiza is so expensive, Finardi said via email that the island is popular with upper-class travelers who want a combination of “beautiful views, high-quality restaurants and bars.” , luxury shopping experience and vibrant nightlife.”

“It also offers lovely areas where guests can find quiet corners to escape the crowds,” he says. “It represents value for money for people looking for these experiences.”

According to co-founder Mariek Anselme, at AMA Selices, a luxury booking website launched in June, the average cost for a 10-day villa stay in Ibiza is around 26,500 euros. Most customers add services such as pop-up cinema experiences – starting at 500 euros per screening – as well as private chefs, yoga classes and spa treatments.

“The island can strike a balance between authentic, boho glamor with the high-end services favored by VIPs and affluent tourists,” Anselme told CNBC via email.

“For decades, it has attracted iconic names in the music industry, creating an upmarket and lavish entertainment scene… In recent years we have seen multiple global leaders in luxury hospitality open their doors in Ibiza, giving it a world-class status that can command high prices,” she added.
