It rained fish over a Texas town this week during an odd weather event

It rains fish in east Texas – but nothing too abnormal.

Earlier this week, Texarkana residents reported small fish falling from the sky during what appeared to be a deadly weather event. The reality is more mundane: Swimmers, many of them the size of the palm of a hand, are likely to be picked up by a water pipe and fall back to earth when it loses momentum, the city told people in a Facebook post.

The city explains that fish rains are an example of “animal rain,” and that “although it’s uncommon,” it can happen when the weather is moderate — and the fish are mild enough.

Of course, the animals don’t originate from the sky before they start to rain – rather, they are picked up from the ground by powerful water pipes, which start in the air and move down to the surface of the water. When these nozzles gain momentum, the vortex at the center of the water pipes can begin to pick up small, light objects – including fish. As the column of water loses energy, the US Library of Congress explains, those small objects fall back.

Torpedoes – super strong winds – are stronger than torpedoes and can pick up animals larger than skinny fish, according to National Geographic, including birds, bats, frogs and snakes.

The residents of Texarkana were all relatively exhausted from the strange weather event. Tim Brigham told CNN affiliate KSLA he thinks it’s “cool” to see the little fish fall from the sky and is also very helpful – he says he “started getting me a bucket and pick them up for fishing bait.” The Wheels and Tire Discount employees got off the tires and instead began cleaning up their parking lot’s surprise seafood platter.

Others shared photos of the fish in their own backyard after the city’s Facebook page asked them to “show us your fish pictures.” Most of them are no bigger than the palm of the people who took the picture.

Texarkana’s animal rain may be one of the only recorded instances of the phenomenon in the state, but California last saw something similar in 2017, when elementary school officials in Oroville reported that 100 fish fell from the sky and landed on the school campus. Fish have fallen from the sky on the town of Lajamanu in Australia’s Northern Territory at least three times in the past 30 years, according to the Weather Channel.
