“It’s a market that meets the stars”

As the 2023 season progresses, the question of Shohei Ohtani’s short-term future remains one of the most talked-about points. Ohtani’s one-year, $30 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels expires at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old superstar’s two-way ability makes him one of the most dynamic players in the MLB. Former MVP and Rookie of the Year is dangerous in the box as well as enchanting on the mound.

“Is there anything Shohei Ohtani can’t do?” – Nut Baseball History

Despite his obvious superiority, he was unable to reach a lasting agreement with the Angels. Contract difficulties coupled with the Angels’ perennial failures made Ohtani’s exit after the season inevitable.

While nearly everyone knows that Ohtani will be looking for contract offers into the season, no one knows his final destination. The only relative guarantee is Angel Los Angeles will probably lose Ohtani this season.

In a recent article for ESPN, writer Buster Olney interviewed a group of MLB executives. Olney wanted to get some insider insight into where Shohei Ohtani might find his final new home.

An executive listed Dodgers Los Angeles were the frontrunners to land Ohtani. The unnamed source said that the Dodgers could be the most logical choice for Ohtani under the following circumstances:

“That makes too much sense for them. It’s a market that meets stars and he’s the biggest star in the game.”

As of the 2023 season, the LA Dodgers have the fifth highest salaries in baseball. Their free-spending style has been on full display with recent signings like Freddie FreemanJ.D. Martinez and Noah Syndergaard.

Anonymous insider also mentioned touted icon Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw, 34, is tied up by a series of one-year contracts and many believe retirement may not be too far away for the three-time Cy Young Award winner.

Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes will cost the teams a lot

While the list of teams wanting Shohei Ohtani is long, the teams that can actually afford to sign him are much shorter. With a total contract value expected to be somewhere in the $500 million range, any potential pursuers will need to have a well-earned wallet. While the Dodgers offer a very viable option, as well as being geographically close to his current home, the final decision will be up to Shohei Ohtani.
