It’s pure, clean tennis: Fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas breaks hoodo first round at Wimbledon

Greek player and Wimbledon fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the second round of the competition, defeating 188th-ranked Alexander Ritschard on Tuesday night, June 28.

Tsitsipas, who was new to the field after a win in Mallorca over Roberto Bautista Agut, was threatened in the first round of the grass competition when Ritschard took the lead in the first set. With the memories of first-round eliminations still fresh in the minds of tennis fans, Tsitsipas was just enough to produce a result, winning the match 7-6. (1) 6-3 5-7 6-4.

The first minutes of the match, Tsitsipas gesticulated frantically, unable to understand his opponent, who was leading 4-1.

However, the talk appeared to be successful and the Greece international overcame his Swiss challenge to pick the first set 7-6.

As the game went on, it looked like the 4th seed would finish this smoothly, however, he lost the third set 5-7. However, the crucial break didn’t do any good for the 28-year-old as Tsitsipas entered the second set with ease, winning the fourth set 6-4 comfortably.

Speaking after the game, the Greek player said he entered the competition with confidence and a love of the surface.

“Well, there is definitely a win against such a big event. The pitch here is completely different. Perfect. You never get the error, which can sometimes help and sometimes doesn’t really help much. It’s pure, clean tennis. I didn’t have the privilege of starting Wimbledon with a title a week ago. That gives me a lot of confidence about getting off to a good start this year. Point or no point, I approach it, I try and approach it the same way. I’m playing just for the idea that Wimbledon came up with,” the 23-year-old said.

“Yes, it makes me love the surface more. I like to play on the grass. Winning tournaments lifts you up, putting you in a better mood. That’s good for your self-esteem, and that’s how I feel. It’s important for you to feel that way, especially when you’re playing at the highest level of tennis. You know, winning titles can really boost your confidence and help you win bigger titles later in your career. You have to start small. You shouldn’t make a big deal out of it right away unless, I don’t know, unless we take girls as an example, they seem to be doing it right away. But on the male side it’s different,” he added.

“I have to congratulate Alexander for an incredible performance and we’ll see more of him,” Tsitsipas said in a court interview after the match started.

He will now face Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the second game of the tournament.
