Jacob Rees-Mogg becomes minister on Brexit opportunities as Boris Johnson reshuffles team

Boris Johnson has begun a small reshuffle of his ministerial team, moving Jacob Rees-Mogg to the role of minister on Brexit opportunities.

Rees-Mogg has been heavily criticized in his previous role as Leader of the House for his role in the Owen Paterson murder scandal.

Rees-Mogg admits he supports breaking the House’s standard rules to try to help Paterson in a corruption scandal. The episode ends in a disastrous government retreat the next day.

Yet Rees-Mogg remained loyal to the British prime minister and it paid off; he will keep his position in the cabinet in his new job, seeking post-Brexit opportunities as well as saving government efficiency.

Johnson has been criticized for not being bold enough to deregulate parts of the UK economy when Britain leaves the EU. Rees-Mogg, a passionate Leaver, will now be tasked with turning Brexit rhetoric into reality.

The minor reshuffle, which takes place at noon on Tuesday, is expected to involve an overhaul of the whip’s office, as Johnson seeks to restore party discipline after weeks of unrest among MPs.

Mark Spencer, chief executive officer, will move to the position vacated by Rees-Mogg and will become Leader of the House, in charge of congressional business. He will also have a seat at the desk.
