Jaguars ‘Urban Meyer: ‘I’m not a candidate’ for Notre Dame coach vacancy

Urban Meyer has called being Notre Dame head coach his “dream job” at various points in his career. He publicly mentioned it as recently as 2008 when he was still coaching in Florida. He was also a candidate for the position of coach in 2005 – before he won a head coach contract with the Gators.

Now, the Notre Dame job is open for the first time since 2009, as Brian Kelly left the school to coach LSU. Would Meyer consider going back to the college level to fill that vacancy if it were recommended to him?

The Jaguars coach shut down any speculation about that possibility during a conference call on Tuesday.

“I’m not a candidate,” Meyer told reporters. “Obviously, I’ve spent six years of my life there, with great respect for Notre Dame, and also USC, UCLA, as we’ve said. But I’m committed to the Jaguars and doing the best I can to make that happen. this around.”

So the answer to that question. Meyer doesn’t seem likely to leave the Jaguars, although it’s worth noting that he hasn’t denied an interest in Notre Dame work. He just said that he was not a candidate. After his off-field controversies at Florida, Ohio State and the Jaguars, Notre Dame may well be hesitant to approach Meyer.

SEX: Alternate history of Notre Dame football

Meyer spent seasons from 1996 to 2000 as the Notre Dame wide team coach. He accomplished that on his first head coach contract at Bowling Green and coached at Utah, Florida and Ohio State before making the switch to pro.

The veteran coach’s first season in Jacksonville went smoothly. The jaguar set a 2-9 record and had many reports of stress out of the Jaguars locker room. 1 pick overall Trevor Lawrence has had a rough rookie season, and the Meyer staff have done little to make his life easier.

Meyer’s performance on the pitch left a lot to be desired, but his behavior off the pitch was also closely watched. The most important, a powerful video by Meyer dancing with a younger woman at an Ohio bar that emerged after the Jaguars’ “Thursday Night Football” loss to the Bengals. Meyer, who has been married since 1986, apologizes to the team and owner Shad Khan said in a statement that Meyer “must regain our trust and our respect.”

TIMELINE: Urban Meyer’s dysfunctional beginnings with Jaguars

Even with these problems, however, Meyer still wanted to see things in Jacksonville. That message has been consistent throughout the year.

After all, this isn’t the first time Meyer has had to deny rumors that he could return to college football for a big shot. After USC fired Clay Helton in September, Meyer’s name popped up as a potential replacement for Trojan, but he categorically denied that possibility.

“No chance,” Meyer told reporters when joining USC. “I’m committed to being here and building an organization.”

So it doesn’t seem like Meyer is ready to woo a Bobby Petrino – unless there’s a drastic change in his philosophy.
