Janelle Monáe’s red cutout dress at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards

Janelle Monáe arrived at the NAACP Image Awards in a fiery red dress that showcased a new side of her style. The sultry satin dress stands out with an asymmetrical figure side cut off and a dramatic leg incision that extends all the way to the thigh. Delicate straps and pleats along the waist provide the finishing touches to this surprisingly colorful look.

Further deviating from their historically muted aesthetic, the singer-actor paired the accessory with red ankle strap heels, diamond earrings and Diamond ring. They parted their bangs neatly to one side and added a glossy red ombré lip, which perfectly matched their dress.

Monáe has gravitated toward bold style trends before, but never in this palette. Previously, she wore feather cutout couture to a premiere, and then, a completely black robe with hip cuts to the Critics’ Choice Award. It was a big night for Monáe, her role in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” earning her a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. She also recently released a new single, “Float”, although she has threatened to withhold any new music following comments about her fashion choices on Twitter.

“Janelle monae is finally showing how great she is instead of dressing like an exclusive man,” one fan wrote in a deleted tweet earlier this month, referring to the relationship. Monáe’s previous relationship with headdresses and bows. When he found out the tweet went viral, Monáe joked answered, “No new tour. Hope it deserves to be loved.” Could their glamorous NAACP Image Award be another response to social media trolls? Read ahead for consideration.
