Jay-Z shared his thoughts ahead of GRAMMY 2023
The music mogul had an exclusive interview with Tidal ahead of Sunday’s awards ceremony. And explained that while there was excitement around his wife being nominated for Album of the Year, he didn’t allow himself to get caught up in the emotions surrounding it.
Well, I took myself out of the process and hoped they would get it right. It got to the point where I was like, it’s just a marketing thing. You go, you’ve released an album and it can help increase sales. It got to that point, but deep down… Again, we grew up idolizing this. It’s like one of the mainstays for us…
The 53-year-old went on to explain why he feels his wife’s latest work deserves praise.
Look what it has done to the culture. Look how the energy of the world moves. They play her entire album in the club. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that. Entire whole joints – like, everything?! Every remix is great. Everyone is inspired. It has inspired the world.
Jay went on to explain that every fan-released cover is “better than the other”.
It inspires creativity… When it only inspires creativity, it’s an album. It should be Album of the Year. It must be so.

The tycoon addresses his frustrations with the Grammys
The Brooklyn-born rapper also expressed his longstanding frustration with the Grammys.
The truth is we grew up wanting to go to the Grammys and that’s our goal. We just want them to do it right. That’s what we want. … Obviously it’s music and it’s all subjective, but you have to be in the baseball field. That’s all we want. We just want them to do it right because we love it so much…
Jay went on to explain that he felt the Grammys “missed the mark” by not awarding his album. 4:44 with Album of the Year at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Additionally, the Grammy Awards nominated the album eight times and Jay ended the evening with no awards.
In that moment, I thought, ‘They missed the opportunity’, because people successfully imitated. In that moment, that album, 4:44, was the moment for us to say, ‘Hip-hop is considered a youth sport. Now it’s this album that can take us into the next realm.’ I feel like they missed the moment.
On this day 5 years ago, JAY-Z fell 4:44
His thirteenth album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, earning 8 . #GRAMMY nominated and created such memorable tracks as “Smile”, “The Story of OJ” and “Family Feud”. It is now PLATINUM certified.https://t.co/1GA9k6NEWA pic.twitter.com/M5zMNxseyv

Hov made the decision to perform at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards
Despite his longstanding disappointment with the Grammys, the 53-year-old revealed that he felt he needed to take the stage “for culture”.
I thought about it, I was thinking in my head and I just thought and said, ‘You know, that’s a four-minute verse.’ Again, for the culture, for the hip-hop, we have to do it. This is not your traditional song. … It’s not your traditional structure of what you think a song nominated for Song of the Year would look like. It’s not what you’d expect… A four-minute verse performed at the Grammy Awards. We have a cultural debt, and it’s not even a burden. That is a blessing. It’s easy and fun.
Roommate, are you happy that Jay performed despite his disappointment with the Grammys? Do you agree with him feeling EASTER Deserves Album of the Year?
