JBL on how he got into pro wrestling

WWE Hall of Famer JBL opened up about how he got into the wrestling business after ending his football career.

According to the former WWE champion, he competed in San Antonio, Texas, in the framework of the American Rugby World Cup. His time on gridiron was cut short due to a string of injuries he suffered.

In a recent interview with Lucha Libre Online, JBL said that he has always been a wrestling fan and that when he was done with football he decided to pursue a career in the squared circle.

“Jason Garrett was our quarterback who eventually became the Dallas Cowboys coach,” JBL said. “And I got cut for the second year. I like to think it was due to injury, maybe because of lack of talent, but I’ve had a lot of injuries. And I met someone who used to wrestle in Japan. And I think man, I’ve always been a wrestling fan.” (1:39)

He added that he wanted to play football for several years, and wrestling was his other option:

“One of my youngest memories is watching wrestling with my grandfather in Sweetwater, Texas,” he recalls. “And so I’ve always wanted to be a wrestler. I just hoped I would play football for eight or ten years, and when that didn’t work out, I think now I have the opportunity to do what I’ve wanted to do. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid and hopefully young enough that I can make a living out of it. So that’s when I started getting into wrestling.” (1:57)

“We had one of the greatest rosters of all time that became a roster with ratings that I didn’t think would match,” JBL said. “And it was a really great time being there. (…) It’s just that every time, you have to change and you always have to be one step ahead. And I think that’s what we’re seeing. in the wrestling industry honestly my all time favorite You know, for me Attitude Era is my favorite, but it was the first time I actually became a part of something that. So for me, I’m biased.” (17:34)
