The Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer already the largest of American full-size SUVs, far exceeding the standard length GM SUV and Explore/Navigator each pair about four inches. However, one of the areas Jeep car no answer is compared to the extended wheelbase versions of other large SUVs. We are talking about Suburban, Yukon XL, Escalade ESV, Expedition Max and Pilot LE. All that beyond Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, but the Jeep’s absence in the wheelbase crowd doesn’t look like it would last much longer if these shoot spies is any sign.
One of our shooters caught testing the Wagoneer with an unmistakably longer wheelbase than the current SUV. It is unmistakable, because of the long wheelbase vans was caught driving right in front of a standard Wagoneer, allowing us to compare their sizes.
Besides simply appearing longer, there are a few indicators of the longer length of this Wagoneer. First, the rear door trim is different from that of a camo’d SUV, as it runs down the sill instead of into the rear fender. Second, when you compare the rear windows side-by-side, the long-wheelbase model’s window extends slightly longer than the standard-length model’s window.
This evidence tells us that the massive Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer will most likely appear soon. When it comes out, we suspect the extra wheelbase will give us more cargo room and possibly even more space in the second and third rows.
Fuel economy is not greatly affected by the extra length of the GM long wheelbase or Ford SUV, so we can expect the same for these Jeeps – that is stingy enough with the 6.4-liter V8 in the Grand Wagoneer. We’re not sure when exactly the long-wheelbase versions will launch, but we suspect that the earliest reveal will likely be for the 2023 model year.
