Jeff Saturday responds to Bill Cowher calling the hiring ‘a disgrace’

Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday responded to comments made by former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher about his hiring.

“I respect his opinion, you know? Here’s the thing. God is my protector, man. I don’t have to defend myself,” Saturday said. Cowher, a Hall of Famer, criticized the Colts for recruiting Saturday about the fact that the 47-year-old had no professional or college-level coaching experience and was working as an ESPN personality at the time he received a call from team owner Jim Irsay.

“I’m speaking on behalf of the coaching profession,” Cowher explained on CBS’s pre-match news program Sunday, every Shanna McCarriston by CBS Sports. “I know for a fact that Jeff Saturday has been offered the opportunity to become the assistant coach of the Indianapolis Colts multiple times over the past four years. Cowher continued:

“The fact that an employer hires a coach who has never been an assistant at the college or professional level and oversees so many qualified candidates to build resumes is a disgrace to the profession. As for how this happened, what happened in Indianapolis is a joke.”

While speaking to King, Saturday declined to accept winning rounds involving Cowher or anyone else doubting his ability to win games as an NFL coach even on a temporary basis.

“I love the coach,” Saturday commented. “I understand why people wonder about this. But in the last week, I’ve been following all of the coaches on our staff and super smart people with well-defined roles. This is clearly doing things very well and I’m impressed. It’s like watching an orchestra.”

Saturday and the 4-5-1 Colts next host the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday afternoon after the 8-0 Eagles face the 4-5 Washington Commanders on Monday night.
