The film, directed by Jim Gillespie, follows friends Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Barry Cox (Ryan Phillippe) and Ray Bronson (Freddy Prinze Jr.) when they are stalked by hook killer Benjamin Willis (Muse Watson). The creepy stalker appears in the photo a year after the group covered up a car accident they allegedly killed a pedestrian, who ended up being Ben.
Although the film was not critically acclaimed, it was a box office success and grossed over $125 million worldwide. I know what you did last summer remained at number one for three consecutive weeks and received nominations at several awards ceremonies, including the MTV Movie Awards and the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.
The movie is followed by sequels I still know what you did last summer (1998) and I will always know what you did last summer (In 2006). Hewitt and Prinze Jr reprized their roles in the 1998 sequel, while the 2006 film featured an entirely new cast.
Based on the 1973 book of the same name by Lois Duncan, the film was written by Kevin Williamson and produced by Neal H. Moritz, Erik Feig and Stokely Chaffin.
In addition to the 4 main roles and Watson, the cast also includes Johnny Galecki, Bridgette Wilson and Anne Heche.
