Jim Jordan sent one of the documents revealed by the committee January 6

Part of that message was read out by the January 6 selection committee during the presentation of their disdain report against Meadows at a meeting this week. The family voted Tuesday night to refer Meadows to the Department of Justice.

A spokesman for Jordan, an Ohio Republican, confirmed to CNN that he forwarded a document to Meadows on January 5 sent to him by Joseph Schmitz, a former Department of Defense inspector general. Schmitz’s text included a draft presentation arguing that Pence had the constitutional authority to object to certification of election results from certain states.

“Mr Jordan forwarded the text to Mr. Meadows, and Mr. Meadows certainly knew it was a relay,” Jordan spokesman Russell Dye confirmed to CNN.

The conservative website “The Federalist” was the first to report that Jordan forwarded the text to Meadows.

The committee, in their presentation, shared only part of the text over the image read by Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California. A committee source told CNN that an aide accidentally put a period before the end of a sentence in the image that was not in the original text.

House votes to refer Mark Meadows to Justice Department for contempt of Congress

Schiff read this from an “unnamed legislator:”

‘On January 6, 2021, Vice President Mike Pence, as President of the Senate, should repeal all electoral votes he believes are unconstitutional because there are no electoral votes at all. . “

Three sources confirmed to CNN that the full text Jordan passed to Meadows included specific information on legal theory and contained a word document outlining the strategy.

Sources say the full message is:

“On January 6, 2021, Vice President Mike Pence, as President of the Senate, should repeal all electoral votes that he believes to be unconstitutional because there are no electoral votes – following the instructions of his founding father Alexander Hamilton and prioritizing the judiciary. Alexander Hamilton wrote in Federalist No. 78, “No statute can be valid.” The court in Hubbard v. Lowe confirmed the facts. This: ‘That an act is unconstitutional is not law at all, is a proposition that is no longer open for discussion.’ 226 F. 135, 137 (SDNY 1915), appeal dismissed, 242 US 654 (1916). For this reason, an unconstitutional appointment of an elector is the same as a law enacted unconstitutionally, not an electorate at all.”

The text from Jordan is another example of Trump supporters’ intense pressure campaign targeting Pence to act on unproven legal theories as a last-ditch effort to stop the certified election results. It was pressure that Pence ultimately refused.

In his presentation, Schiff argued the text was proof that Meadows was at the heart of this pressure campaign and that the committee needed to question him about the text’s content and what he had done. do with information.

“You can see why this is so important to ask Mr. Meadows,” Schiff said. “About a lawmaker suggesting that the former vice president cast only votes he unilaterally considers unconstitutional to overturn the presidential election and undermine the will of the American people.”
