On Wednesday night, Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Trump’s new social media platform.
“Donald Trump, you know, isn’t on Twitter – he’s banned from using Twitter – but little Don Jr is on Twitter, and yesterday he gave his followers a preview of the transmission project. Dad’s new social media,” Kimmel said.
As you may know, the former reality TV host turned president was kicked out of Twitter after he violated the platform’s terms of service on several occasions. Twitter did so to “Preventing glorification of violence can inspire others to reproduce acts of violence and identify that [his tweets] will most likely encourage and inspire people to recreate the atrocities that took place at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.”
So Don Jr. – who, like his sibling, has been subpoenaed in an ongoing fraud investigation into the family company – shared Trump’s first post on Truth Social, the website run by Trump onion. It reads, “Get ready! Your favorite President will see you soon! ”
Truth Social hopes to be an alternative to other right-wing social media platforms like Parler and Gab, both of which have been defeated by QAnon kooks and neo-Nazis.
“You may notice this new site looks almost exactly like Twitter. How many million dollars and a year did he lose to change a blue check mark to a red check mark,” joked Kimmel. “They basically turned Donald Trump into a fake Twitter to post on. See, that’s what we should do: Build him a fake Oval Office, tell him he’s president again, and everyone wins. ”
Although Truth Social, currently in beta, promises to foster “open, free and honest global conversation without discrimination about political ideology”, the platform also contains a clause ban users from mocking it.
