Johnny Depp thanks jury for returning ‘my life to me’ after defamation trial verdict

Johnny Depp has thanked the Virginia jury for returning ‘my life to me’ following the verdict of their defamation trial in his case against ex-wife Amber Heard.

Mr Depp, who said he was “modest” before the jury’s verdict, won against Ms Heard and she was ordered to pay the actor $15 million in damages.

But the jury also awarded Ms Heard $2 million for part of her own counterclaim, that Mr Depp’s attorney had called her abuse allegations against her ex-husband a hoax. .

Mr Depp was not present in the courtroom to hear the verdict, instead he was discovered at a pub in Newcastle, UK.

“Six years ago, my life, the lives of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and the lives of those who over the years have supported and trusted me have changed forever. change. All in the blink of an eye,” he said in a statement.

“False, very serious and criminal charges have been made against me through the media, which has spawned loads of hateful content, even though no charges have been brought against me. It circumnavigated the world twice in a nanosecond, and it has had a huge impact on my life and career.

“And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I’m really humbled.”

The $5 million portion of damages awarded to Mr. Depp would be capped under Virginia law at $350,000.

“From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth is something I owe to my children and all those who have consistently supported me. I feel at peace knowing I’ve finally accomplished that,” he added.

“I am, and have been, overwhelmed by the overwhelming love and huge support and kindness from all over the world. I hope that my act of truth-telling will help others, men or women, who have found themselves in my situation and whose supporters never give up. .

“I also hope that the position now goes back to being innocent until proven guilty, both in court and in the media.”
