Just a week ago, Todd Phillips announced on social media that he is reuniting with Joaquin Phoenix to start work Joker 2but now the details of the sequel are getting a little more interesting. Joker: Folie à deux will be a musical, and Lady Gaga in early talks to play the role of Harley Quinn, Theo The Hollywood Reporter.
According to the story, Gaga will be set to play a very different version of Harley from the current DC Universe incarnation played by Margot Robbie. This would fit in with the general format of the original film, which also cast Phoenix as the Joker in his own universe, separate from the other DC movies. The Hollywood Reporter reports that neither Phoenix nor Gaga have closed deals to make the film.
Phillips and Gaga have also worked together before. Phillips was a producer in 2018 A star was bornstarring Gaga along with Bradley Cooper – who in turn produced Joker. With the move made Joker 2 a musical, it seemed fitting for Phillips to turn to a slightly eccentric star with more musical talent than anyone could possibly take on the role of Harley.
Meanwhile, on Gaga’s side, Joker: Folie à deux would be completely in line with her previous tendency to choose movies. She has now starred in two popular dramas and has won critical acclaim but there is no Oscar for both. Meanwhile, the original Joker received 11 nominations and two wins, including a Best Actor statuette for his lead role for Joaquin Phoenix.
One question this new casting news raises is what this movie might be about. While early speculations suggested the film’s working name, Joker: Folie à deux, might refer to Batman, now it looks like it could refer to the Joker’s longtime partner in love and crime, Harley, instead. Either way, with Joker 2Most likely the stars haven’t closed the deal yet, we might have to wait a while for a trailer or release date.
