Junkyard Gem: 2006 Chrysler Sebring Touring Convertible

Quick, what was the cheapest new convertible that Americans could buy in 2006? If you guess “Chrysler PT Cruiser” ($19.890 MSRP) you’re right, but Pontiac Solstice only cost an extra $25. Then there are things like Miata, Mustang, New Beetleetc., all for under $25,000 in their most affordable ragtop versions of that year. The Chrysler Sebring is the cheapest midrange converted in 2006, with prices starting at just $26,115 (about $39,005 in 2022 dollars), beyond Toyota Camry Solara SE 825 dollars. This is one of the spacious but reasonably priced rooms Chrysler convertible, now fully used and in a self-service yard in Colorado.

Chrysler sells Sebrings since 1995 until 2010 model five, in three generations. The convertible version appeared very early, starting in 1996; it started on the same platform as the now long forgotten “Cars in the Clouds” (Chrysler Cirrus, Plymouth Breeze, Dodge Stratus), then moved in 2007 to a platform developed by Mitsubishi / DaimlerChrysler been through everything from Outlanders to Avengers. That makes today Junkyard Gems one of the newest American members of the Cloud Car family tree GAZ built the Volga Sibers derived from Sebring in Russia in a few years.

By the time it reached this place, it had already become a whole hooptie. Paint can flash, decorate with duct tape fix, works. Only 16 years old but done.

The repair of the harness for the torn hood shows the ingenuity of a former owner.

Plywood seems to keep the roof from collapsing.

Because so many Sebrings are invisible fleet cars, it’s easy to forget that a convertible even exists. In fact Sebring to be The best-selling new convertible in America in the mid-2000s.

When the 24 Hours of Lemons race series first began Sebring International Circuit in 2014, I used my great strength like Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Lemons to get free admission for Chrysler Sebring Race car. That year we had two Sebrings, both convertibles.

The base Sebrings for 2006 have 2.4 liters in line four Neon just stopped productionwhile the Touring, GTC and Limited trim levels feature this 200 hp DOHC V6 engine (originally developed for Chrysler cars for sale) volume 2.7 liters.

The first Sebrings in the US market could be purchased with a 5-speed manual transmission, but a 4-speed automatic transmission was required at the time of this car’s production.

This is one of the real junk cars necessary, needs some olfactory support. Next stop: Crusher!

Sebring begged to drive.
