Junkyard Gem: 2008 Suzuki Reno
Next time you have a car night out at your local dump/bar (hey, Such places exist), you can try to fool your customers with really a difficult: What is the final US market designed car entirely by Daewoo before GM took over? Sure, Americans can buy a badged Daewoo Lanos, Nubiraand Leganza for a few years in the early 2000s, and Verona really just a slightly updated Leganza with Suzuki badges plastered on it. The Chevy Aveo/Pontiac G3 descended from Lanos, but that particular Daewoo sauce had been diluted by other GM flavors by the time it hit our shores. I say the answer is Daewoo Lacetti – Yes, that Lacetti – sold in the United States as Suzuki Forenza (in sedan form) and Suzuki Reno (in hatchback form). Here’s an example of one of the last Renos you can buy here, found in a car graveyard near Denver, Colorado.
Reno built by Korea never make much of an impression about the reviewers here – or, I’m pretty sure, any – of the publication, though styled by Giugiaro, although it was very reasonably priced during its US sale from 2005-2008. My only experience driving the Reno was when I rented one in South Carolina for just $9.98 a day. For that price, I think it’s a perfectly usable carrier.
Suzuki has been building cars for GM since the first Cultus appeared in US showrooms like Chevrolet Sprint 1985, and the relationship between the two companies became stronger as the 20th century turned into the 21st. They joined forces to buy the bankrupt Daewoo in 2004, while Suzuki of America sold the hastily renovated Nubira gold starting next year. After a little excitement over The promising Suzuki KizashiAmerican Suzuki filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and Stop selling cars here next year. Don’t feel too bad for Suzuki, though – in Japan, the company has enjoyed years of sales success with Hustlerand of course Suzuki motorcycles and ATV still popular here.
How much does this small Daewoo cost when new? With the base 5-speed manual transmission, the MSRP on the base Reno ’08 is $13,839, or about $19,425 in 2022.
However, this car has an automatic transmission, a $1,100 option ($1,545 now).
Friend do there’s air conditioning and AM/FM stereo in the ’08 Reno facility. This vehicle has an optional CD player with AUX input.
Honda has VTEC and Daewoo has D-TEC. This engine is rated at 126 hp, while the version in Reno SWT . factory hot bar (Suzuki Works Techno) produces… 126 hp. Sadly, the SWT package (also available on Aero) just alloy wheels and some decorations, like OZ Rally Mitsubishi Lancer.
This car is 12 years old, with the original owner’s manual still inside. The body and interior look pretty clean, so we can assume that some costly mechanical problems are forced to solve this problem. Daewoo Suzuki.
There used to be a princess on board, in happier times.
The princess had a baby. I wonder what kind of car they are in today.
You won’t be shocked to know that Reno doesn’t have many US-market TVs advertisement. Here’s a trailer for Lacetti’s hatchback for the Netherlands.
As a well-positioned member of the GM Empire (which it still until just a few years ago), Holden had a version of this car called the Viva.
The ad in the Egyptian market for the Chevrolet-branded Lacetti tells a story so impressive that I have to include it here, despite the fact that the car starring is a sedan rather than a hatchback. .
