There are a number of broad recipients who reasonably claim to be the best in NFL.
Packers-turn-Raiders widen Davante Adams has increased the number of touches, catches and yards over the past few seasons. Cooper Kupp won three crowns received last season. The case for Deebo Samuel and Tireek Hill far beyond traditional statistics.
On Thursday, Kupp was asked to take on the role of Jefferson over Adams and, by extension, himself.
“I respect his opinion and I can also respect disagree,” Rams receiver told reporters.
However, the reigning Super Bowl MVP was not offended by Jefferson’s assertion.
“I hope he will say that,” Kupp said. “I think that’s the beauty of this game. I think it speaks to the competitiveness of this tournament. If you don’t set yourself up to be the best and you don’t work to be the best, then I’ll worry. If you don’t feel like you’re prepared to be the best player you can be.”
Jefferson had a great start to his career.
In 2020, he broke the rookie record with 1,400 yards received. Jefferson improved on that in 2021, scoring 1,616 ball receptions and 10 touchdowns.
His 3,016 yards received over the past two seasons is the most of anyone in that period and a record for any player in the first two years. Adams, however, is averaging the most yards per game (97.6) since 2020. Jefferson is second (91.4). Kupp is inferior in both total yards received (2.921) and yards received per game (91.3).
Cooper Kupp, Justin Jefferson Highlight NFL WR Top 10 List
The wide receiver location has changed over the past decade. They are an essential part of today’s offense and are some of the highest paid players. Colin Cowherd reviews today’s top receivers, including Davante Adams and Cooper Kupp, and compares them to the stars of 20 years ago.
Adams has led the way in catches over the past two seasons (238) and is the only player to score at least 110 catches in each campaign. Kupp had 237 catches (while playing two more games) and Jefferson had 196, the seventh most in that span.
This trio falls in the same order of receiving TDs as of 2020, with Adams taking the top spot in the league 29, Kupp 19 and Jefferson, 17.
Jefferson, however, is the only player in the league to score at least 1,400 yards in each of the past two seasons. What’s more, his 15.3 yards per reception outstrips Adams and Kupp, both of whom averaged 12.3.
In short, they can all claim to be the best out there. The stiff competition just means they’ll have to keep backing it up.
